How on-device background removal works
This tool uses a compact AI segmentation model (MODNet) that runs entirely inside your browser via WebGPU (when available) or WebAssembly as a fallback. The first time you use it, your browser downloads the model file — roughly 15 MB — and caches it. Every removal after that reuses the cached model, so it's much faster on your second and third photo.
Where it shines, and where it doesn't
The model is trained specifically for portrait matting — it's excellent at separating a person from their background, including tricky areas like hair. It's less precise on product photos, animals, or complex objects with fine repeating detail; for those cases, treat the result as a strong starting point and expect to touch up the edges in an image editor.

Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model runs entirely inside your browser using WebGPU or WebAssembly. Your photo is never sent anywhere — only the generic AI model file is downloaded once, the first time you use the tool.
Why does the first removal take longer than the second?
The first run downloads and initializes the AI model (roughly 15-30 MB). Your browser caches it afterward, so every subsequent background removal is much faster.
Does this work well on all photos?
It's optimized for portraits and people and does very well there. Results on product photos, animals, or complex objects can be less precise — expect some manual touch-up for those.
What format does the result download as?
A PNG with a transparent background. You can also pick a solid replacement color directly in the tool before downloading.
